Do I need to pass English ATAR to get into Uni?

Unlocking University: Understanding English requirements for WA High School Students

Hi! Welcome back to A1 Tutors blog.

I'm Adalia, and with over 7 years of tutoring experience, I've assisted more than 60 students in excelling in English and meeting university requirements. Over the years, I've encountered numerous questions about the significance of passing English and whether it's a graduation prerequisite. In this brief guide, I'll walk you through the essentials needed to qualify for university.

Your path to university hinges on something called the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). It is a score based on your year 12 grades (50% school grade and 50% WACE exam).

To set the stage for university success, students need to take a minimum of four ATAR courses. These courses, though challenging, serve as excellent preparation for the challenges of university life.

To be considered for university as a high school leaver using ATAR, students need to:

  1. Meet the Western Australian Certificate of Education requirements.

  2. Demonstrate English Language Competency, which can be fulfilled through passing:

  • ATAR English

  • ATAR Literature

  • ATAR EAL/D or an equivalent (with a scaled score of 50 or above)

  • Meeting the minimum requirements in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) written test for English.

  1. Achieve a high enough ATAR for the specific course they want to pursue.

  2. Fulfill any prerequisites or special requirements for their chosen course.

What is STAT?

If you do not meet the English requirements in high school through ATAR, you can sit the STAT test after high school. The STAT test is an external exam that you can apply for personally in order to achieve english competency. The STAT test is $170/test and is valid for 3 years. You must meet a certain score in order to achieve english competency and be able to apply to university.
